Common Questions

F.A.Q.

Why do you require an in-person meeting to book?

Korey and I don't consider our clients a business transaction, but rather a relationship. Capturing your likeness and personality is a work of art that is about as unique as it gets; we can't just resell "you" like a t-shirt! I place a strong value on your comfort, and part of ensuring that happens means I need to make sure we jive well with one another. Honestly, it's just like anything else—a job interview, a dating app, social media—online can be a great place to start, but when it comes to really knowing someone, nothing beats face-to-face interaction!

What forms of payment do you accept?

Lace + Fern accepts all major credit cards, checks, and cash for both session payments and product payments. Keep in mind that if you're arranging a payment plan with us, we only accept credit cards for those.

Also important to remember: like most other businesses, delivery of services and products are dependent on successful receipt of payments. We can't deliver anything if a check bounces or a credit card is declined.

How is your process different from other photographers?

I think the coolest part about the photography community is that no one is the same. There are photographers for every budget, taste, and session type, each with a different business model. We focus on the quality of your session, and also the quality of the products your memories get printed on! We want your memories to be heirlooms that stand the test of time, and we've done the research so you don't have to. If you're a bit sentimental, enjoy holding photos in your hands, and believe in quality over quantity, then we're probably going to be the perfect fit! We have something called a "Reveal & Ordering Appointment" that happens once I've finished editing your session, where you can purchase exactly what you value. You choose your products, and we'll handle the hassle of placing your order and corresponding with the lab!

Still like having digital images as backup? We totally get it; maintaining a personal archive of your images "just in case" is important. Your final images will be delivered in a digital gallery on the same day as the rest of the photography products you've ordered!

How early should we book our session with you?

The simple answer? As soon as possible! Availability can vary depending on the time of year, and if you have a very specific date you need for your session (for example, your wedding day), sooner is better. Additionally, consider what all will go into your session: do we need to book a hair and/or makeup artist for your session day? Are you planning to order all new outfits online, where you're at the mercy of shipping times to Alaska? Is the location you're interested in difficult to get to? Does the location you want require any permits in order to shoot there? The more there is going into your session, the more important it is to book earlier so we have time to prepare.

All that being said, don't be afraid to reach out to us with last minute session requests! If I have the time, I'll do everything I can to squeeze you in; the worst that can happen is that I'll be unavailable.

How do you feel about the LGBTQ+ community?

We fully support the LGBTQ+ community and value you as our friends, family, clients, and fellow creatives/small business owners. Korey and I have always been allies of the LGBTQ+ community and firmly believe that love is love. You're completely safe with us, and we enjoy providing a safe, open environment for everyone we work with! You don't have to hide anything or feel nervous when you're with us.

If you're part of the LGBTQ+ community and notice anything we can do to improve as an LGBTQ+ supportive business, we welcome your suggestions so we can learn and grow together!

I found a cheaper photographer; can you match them and give me a discount?

Every single photographer has different costs to run their business, and we fully support knowing your budget and avoiding debt. Even though we sometimes join forces with fellow 'togs, we each have our own specific businesses, so we don't match their prices. Just like all other business owners we've spent a lot of time calculating our Costs of Doing Business to make sure we're charging a fair amount for our clients that also allows us to pay our bills, insurance, licensing, taxes, and eat. Additionally, giving discounts wouldn't be fair to our other clients who value us at full price.

If paying one large chunk at a time is your worry, we are more than happy to set up a custom, secure payment plan for you! Don't be afraid to ask us about what payment plan options we have available.

What should we do if our location requires a permit?

For all the beautiful hidden public gems Alaska has to offer, there are just as many that require permits to access or photograph on. National parks, glaciers, greenhouses, and even normally public places like libraries can require permits when photography is brought into the picture (no pun intended)! Permit requirements, including for the photographer and assistant, must be paid for by the client, so make sure you've done your research on the location you want! As laidback as Korey and I are about nearly everything, this is one rule we're not willing to break: we will not sneak into a location and risk getting asked to leave, fined, or arrested. Being prepared and going through all the required legal channels is incredibly important if you want to work with us.

How long will we have to wait to see our photos?

That depends on the session you're having with us! Generally, portraiture and boudoir will take approximately 2-4 weeks, and weddings/elopements take between 4-6 weeks. Keep in mind that this timeline can shift slightly depending on the length of the session, how many sessions I'm currently editing, and if any unforeseen emergencies arise. If anything comes up that extends turnaround time, we'll communicate that with you as soon as possible!

Can you hold our session date for us?

We can only hold dates if you've met with us, signed the contract, and paid your session's retainer fee. We operate on a "first come, first served" basis, and sessions are never considered booked until payment and contract are finalized. If you meet with us and need time to think over whether you want to hire us, we completely understand and will do our best to reach out to you if someone else inquires about the date you want; however, if we don't hear from you quickly and someone else is ready to book, they may get your spot.

As they say, the early bird gets the worm, so come bearing that thought in mind if you have a specific date that cannot be changed.

What are your hours?

Since the office is "by appointment only" and we're often out on photoshoots, we don't have set office hours; we have a bit of variation on when we can meet for consults, sessions, and reveals. However, if you're wondering when to expect responses via phone or email to general inquiries, we handle correspondence between the hours of 10am-6pm.
